ETS ACADEMY · LESSON 6
The Great Commandment
Teaching points
- Love is not a feeling — it is a decision followed by action. Jesus didn't say 'feel love' — He said 'love.'
- The Great Commandment has two inseparable dimensions: love for God (vertical) and love for people (horizontal).
- You cannot love God whom you've never seen if you don't love the person in front of you whom you have seen.
- Love is the evidence of discipleship. Jesus said the world will know we are His by our love.
- Love costs something. It always has. The cross is the ultimate proof.
Read in Scripture
- Matthew 22:36-40
- 1 John 4:7-21
- John 13:34-35
- 1 Corinthians 13
- Galatians 6:2
Reflect
- Which dimension — love for God or love for people — is stronger in your life right now?
- Who is the hardest person in your life to love? What would it look like to love them intentionally?
- How does your love for God show up in your daily decisions?
- What would your church look like if everyone loved like Jesus described?
Put it into practice
- Write out 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and put it where you'll see it.
- Choose one person to love intentionally this week — through action, not just words.
- Ask God to grow your love for Him and for others daily.
